Doris Inez Wilson was born on March 8, 1930, to Lawrence Wilson, Sr. and Selma (McBride) Wilson in the Bluff Creek Community of Lee County, Texas. She received her formal education in several schools throughout the county.
At an early age, Doris received Christ as her Lord and savior. She soon began attending and working in the House of God. She often told the stories of ushering in church at just three years old, standing proudly beside her aunt. Her faith and service remained central throughout her life.
Doris met and married Luther Ross. To this union, two children were born, and together they also raised a bonus son. She later married Ulysses Bell, and to this union one daughter was born.
Doris lived in Fort Worth, Texas for some years and later returned to the Giddings area. As a hard worker and devoted provider, she held numerous jobs over the years. Most notably she worked as a nursing assistant and a cook. In her later years, she enjoyed assisting at the Combined Community Action Center. She was known for collecting valuables and recycling for the benefit of her community.
Her love for God and the church led her to Triumph Missionary Baptist Church in Ledbetter, Texas. Under the leadership of Pastor Leslie Chandler, Jr., she faithfully served for many years on both the Usher Board and the Culinary Team.
Doris enjoyed having fun, fellowship, and friendly competition. She traveled near and far for a good game of dominoes or cards, where her lively storytelling and playful “trash-talking” became her signature. She had a deep love for cats. She knew every one of her cats by name and would go out of her way to make sure they were fed real good.
Doris peacefully departed this life on Friday, November 21, 2025, at the blessed age of 95. She enjoyed a peaceful journey, without one day of suffering. Her time here on earth was one of serenity and grace.
She was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; two children, Jarvis Ross and Kathleen Bell; and her siblings, Lucius Wilson, Lawrence Wilson Jr., Paul Wilson, and Artirice Mae Brooks.
She leaves to cherish her memory: one daughter, Roxey Levada Ross of Dallas, Texas; her bonus son, Richard of Temple, Texas; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruthie Mae Jarmon of Austin, Texas and Mary Ann Wilson of Houston, Texas; a special cousin and caregiver, Ted Wolridge of Giddings, Texas; a host of nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends.
