Mrs. Hester (Fillmore) Rucker was born July 19, 1933, in Ledbetter, Texas to the late Mack and Inez (Blue) Fillmore. She grew up the only girl among three brothers. She attended school and church in her beloved Ledbetter community. Hester met and married the love of her life, Mr. E. J. Rucker and relocated to Galveston, Texas. During her time in Galveston, she was employed by McCrory’s as a short order cook.
The Rucker family relocated to Houston, Texas during the early 1960’s. While living in Houston she transferred to McCrory’s downtown location until her retirement. Hester’s customers recognized her for her excellent cooking skills and quick wit.
Mrs. Rucker was a faithful member of Magnolia Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. I. H. White for many years. She served as a choir member and worker in the mission department. Hester later became a member of Mt. Pilgrim Missionary Baptist where she participated in Mission, Sunday School and the Women’s Ministry until her health began to fail.
The Lord answered her plea for eternal rest on July 19, 2021, peacefully in her home surrounded in love by her dear children Dinah and Richard.
She was preceded in death by: her husband E. J. Rucker, her parents, Mack and Inez Fillmore; three brothers, Theodore Fillmore, Sterling Fillmore, and Lawrence Fillmore. Also preceding her in death are her beloved grandchildren, Stephanie Rucker and Eric Rucker, Sr.
