Johnnie Barn Gantt was born on March 6, 1943, in Washington County, Texas, to Charlie and Sewilla (Henegan) Gantt. He was the fifth child born to this union and grew up in a loving family rooted in faith and community. Johnnie received his early education at George Washington Carver School in Burton, Texas.
At a young age, Johnnie accepted Christ and became a member of St. Mary’s Baptist Church in the Post Oak Community of Lee County, Texas. He was blessed with a remarkable talent for construction and spent his working years contributing to numerous housing and highway projects. His craftsmanship, dedication, and steady hands left a lasting mark on the communities he served.
On Saturday, December 6, 2025, Johnnie answered his Master’s call and entered eternal rest. He is preceded in death by his father, Charlie Gantt; his mother, Sewilla (Henegan) Gantt; four brothers, William Gantt, Winford Gantt Sr., James Gantt, and Woodrow Gantt; and one sister, Charles Etta Lewis.
Johnnie leaves to cherish his memory his five children: Sandra Gantt, Bennie Gantt, Steve Gantt, George Taplin, and Tyronza "Bunky" Tolbert; one sister, Mary Lewis of Austin, Texas; two brothers, Arthur Gantt of Ledbetter, Texas, and Donald Gantt of Burton, Texas; and a very special niece, Joyce Gantt. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren, along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends who will forever hold him in their hearts.
