Rose J. Woods was born on April 16, 1938, in Schulenburg, Texas to Albert Woods and Velma Hannah (Lee) Woods. She graduated with honors from J.A. Green Colored School on St. John Road in Schulenburg and later attended Huston–Tillotson University in Austin, Texas.
Rose began playing the piano at an early age, a gift that would bless many throughout her lifetime. During her youth, she joined Pleasant Union Missionary Baptist Church, where she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and was baptized under the leadership of the late Rev. Dr. George W. Edwards. For more than forty years, she remained a faithful and dedicated member, serving as church financial secretary, pianist, youth matron, and in many other capacities as needed.
She was instrumental in organizing the Schulenburg Community Choir, which sang at local and surrounding churches, including engagements with the LaGrange Baptist District Association in Giddings, Texas, and presented many soul-stirring musicals. She also faithfully served as a member of the Mount Zion District Association for over twenty-six years. Following in her mother’s footsteps, Rose was a proud member of the Grand Court Order of Calanthe.
Rose dedicated her professional life to serving others as a Social Worker with the Texas Department of Human Resources in La Grange, Texas, until her retirement. She was truly a great asset to her community.
She later became a member of Friendship Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. James Foley and Rev. Anderson. There she continued her faithful service as church pianist, president of the Mission Department, and sponsor of numerous church programs.
When Friendship Baptist Church closed its doors, Rose united with Good Hope Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Dennis Herring. She faithfully served as pianist and organist, Sunday School teacher, and Mission Department member. She attended diligently until her health declined.
In God’s infinite wisdom, Rose J. Woods was called home on Saturday, February 14, 2026. She was preceded in death by her mother, Hannah Lee Woods; her father, Albert Woods; and one sister, Sherron L. Woods.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories: one daughter, Karen L. Smith; one grandson, Ryan Patrick McNeal (affectionately known as “Stink Cat”); and a host of cousins, relatives, and dear friends.
