Sheryl R. Ray was born on Saturday, January 9, 1960, in Lee County, Texas. She was the fourth of five children, and only daughter, born to Onnie Ray Jr. and Verlee (Colvin) Ray.
Sheryl accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and was baptized. She became a member of St. Mary’s Baptist Church and often served alongside her family at Post Oak Baptist Church in the same community.
Sheryl received her formal education and graduated from Giddings High School. In her early years, she worked at Lee Memorial Hospital of Giddings, in the dietary department. Having an interest in beautifying people, she continued her studies at Brenham Beauty College, where she earned her cosmetology diploma in October of 1992. On June 12, 1993, she proudly announced the grand opening of her hair salon, New Image. After many successful years as a cosmetologist, Sheryl developed a passion for working with numbers and transitioned into tax preparation. She went on to have a long and distinguished career with H&R Block, serving clients for 33 years.
Sheryl met and married the late, Floyd Mathis Jr., and together they made their home in the Post Oak community. Their union was blessed with two beautiful daughters, Sheree and Kimberly. In her free time, she enjoyed traveling, baking, and engaging in meaningful conversations with family and friends.
On Wednesday, September 17, 2025, God called Sheryl home. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Floyd Mathis Jr.; her parents, Onnie Ray Jr. and Verlee (Colvin) Ray; two brothers, Darryl Ray and Dwayne Ray; her maternal grandparents, Aaron Colvin and Amanda (Simpson) Colvin and her paternal grandparents, Onnie Ray Sr. and Lola (Williams) Ray.
