Verlene Sams

On October 26, 1954, Hayward Sams Sr. and Roxie Mae (Braziel) Sams welcomed their daughter, Verlene, into the world. She attended school in Dime Box, Texas, where she graduated before later moving to Somerville, Texas. Verlene worked at several restaurants throughout her career and became widely known as one of the best cooks in town. She later joined Somerville ISD, where she faithfully served until her retirement.

Verlene was the devoted mother of three children: Christopher, Gretchen, and Samuel, whom she loved dearly. She cherished her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and found great joy in spending time with them. Verlene was a faithful member of Goodwill Baptist Church in Dime Box, Texas, under the leadership of Pastor Richard Washington.

On Monday, June 22, 2026, Verlene peacefully transitioned to her heavenly home. She was preceded in death by her parents, Hayward Sams Sr. and Roxie Mae Sams; her sister, Jeulene Sams; and her three brothers, Hayward Sams Jr., John Willis Sams and Curtis Roy Sams.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories: her sons, Christopher Lee Darden (Dana) of Crowley, Texas, and Samuel Dwight Robertson of Somerville, Texas; her daughter, Gretchen Deshae Brown of Hempstead, Texas; her grandchildren, Krystopher Marquis Brown and Delysia Deshae Brown; her great-grandchildren, Elliese Londyn Brown and Zius Josiah Williams; her sisters, Valedine Burnett (Elijah) of Fort Worth, Texas, Arlene Sams and Earselen Harris of Giddings, Texas, and Clara Mae Willrich (Ronnie) of Lexington, Texas; her brother, Henry Sams of Lexington, Texas; and a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives, and dear friends.
